In recent years, port logistics throughput in Southeast Asia has surged. Last month, the HSCRNAE engineering team completed a major delivery. They delivered a custom 35-ton straddle carrier to a yard in Johor, Malaysia. The straddle carrier was successfully installed at a large container transit yard.
This is more than a routine export business for us. It proves our ability to handle tropical maritime climates and heavy operations. We will review the project’s pain points, technical specs, and final solutions here.
This Malaysian client operates a top-three private container yard locally. Their old reach stackers and gantry cranes failed to handle growing throughput. During initial discussions, the client presented three urgent on-site challenges:
●Difficult to meet space utilization standards: Existing equipment had large turning radiuses and wide lanes. This caused severe waste of valuable yard space.
●High failure rate under extreme climate: Malaysia has year-round high heat, humidity, and rapid salt spray corrosion. The client’s old electrical systems often shut down from poor heat dissipation.
●Operator fatigue and safety hazards: Equipment runs 24/7 during peak seasons. Old cabs had heavy vibration and blind spots, causing container accidents.
We did not simply copy standard drawings for this site. Instead, we recommended an optimized smart straddle carrier. Here are the core technical specifications of the delivered equipment:
|
Parameter Item |
Specification & Description |
| Model | HS-SC35T |
| Rated Capacity | 35 tons (under spreader) |
| Max Lifting Height | 9.5 meters (meets “1-over-2″ stacking requirements) |
| Span / Internal Width | Allows smooth pass of standard 20ft/40ft containers and trucks |
| Power Unit | Cummins diesel generator set with low emissions |
| Drive & Control | Siemens all-AC VFD drive + PLC smart control |
| Full Load Travel Speed | 15 km/h |
| Full Load Lifting Speed | 12 m/min |
| Steering Mode | 8-wheel independent steering, crab steering, zero-radius turn |
| Anti-Corrosion Level | C5-M heavy marine grade (epoxy zinc-rich primer + polyurethane topcoat) |
Specs are just paper numbers. Our customized modifications truly convinced the client to close the deal:
Tropical Climate Reinforcement:
1.We equipped the electrical box with a heavy-duty industrial AC. It features a rain-proof louvered air inlet.
2.The engine radiator surface received a special anti-corrosion coating. This prevents high temperature alarms even at 45°C ambient heat.
Maximizing Space and Flexibility: We adopted a multi-directional hydraulic steering system. The straddle carrier travels straight, sideways, and turns 90 degrees on the spot. This reduced truck lane width by nearly 30%. It added hundreds of extra TEU storage slots for the client.
Humanized & Smart Upgrades:
1.We installed a self-developed flexible electronic anti-sway system. Because straddle carriers have high chassis, lifting sway is a major challenge. This system cancels 80% of sway during lifting and braking. New drivers can quickly align twistlocks with container corner castings.
2.The cab features panoramic blast-proof glass and aviation-grade shock-absorbing seats. This greatly reduces operator fatigue during shift rotations.
Logistics and installation of large port machinery are very challenging. We created a strict overseas delivery plan:
●Modular Disassembly & Shipping: Shipping a full straddle carrier is too costly. We disassembled the straddle carrier into four main modules. These include columns, top beam, chassis, and power cabin. They went to Port Klang by bulk ship and then overland to Johor.
●Assembly During Rainy Season: Installation coincided with the local rainy season. Three HSCRNAE engineers used gaps between rainstorms to work efficiently. They finished assembly, piping, and electrical debugging in just 12 days. This was a full week ahead of schedule.
●Hands-On Training: Delivery means more than just handing over keys. We conducted 5 days of practical and maintenance training on site. This ensured the client’s team mastered the PLC troubleshooting logic.
After two months of operation, the yard manager sent performance data. Single container handling time dropped by 15%. Overall fuel consumption decreased by 20% compared to reach stackers.
“The HSCRNAE straddle carrier runs extremely smoothly,” said the operations director. “The steering system is tailor-made for our crowded yard. The electrical system worked flawlessly even through several heavy rainstorms.” — Operations Director, Johor Yard.
Every successful delivery proves the strength of HSCRNAE products. We will continue serving Southeast Asia and Belt & Road markets. We provide reliable handling solutions with solid crane manufacturing craftsmanship.
