Oman’s Port of Salalah is a core container transit hub for the Middle East and Indian Ocean coasts. Dense regional shipping routes intersect here. This drives the port’s annual throughput steadily upward. The port operator introduced new yard crane equipment in batches. This meets yard expansion and high-frequency container dispatch demands. This case details the customized 50 ton RTG crane project. HSCRANE successfully delivered it to the port. These units are now the main force for yard operations.
During early surveys, the HSCRANE engineering team collected data. They also evaluated environmental conditions for port operations. Objective challenges facing the equipment focus on the following aspects:
●Extreme climate shifts: The port borders a tropical desert climate. Summer surface temperatures often exceed 50℃. Intense UV radiation and sandstorms also occur. These directly threaten equipment cooling and electrical sealing performance.
●High salt spray corrosion: Coastal operations face fluctuating humidity. The air is also rich in chloride ions. Traditional steel anti-corrosion coatings easily blister and peel quickly.
●High-pressure workloads: As a hub, yards need 24/7 operations. This demands high mean time between failures (MTBF). Hoisting and gantry travel mechanisms face extremely strict requirements.
Based on survey data and yard layouts, HSCRANE provided solutions. We deployed heavy-duty 50 ton RTG crane units. They can stack containers one over five. Specific technical parameters are as follows:
|
Technical Indicator |
Parameter Specification |
| Equipment Model | HS-RTG-50T |
| Rated Lifting Capacity Under Spreader | 50 tons (includes standard 20ft/40ft telescopic spreader) |
| Main Girder Span | 23.47 meters (covers 6 container rows + 1 truck lane) |
| Max Lifting Height | 18.2 meters (stack 1 over 5) |
| Duty Group (FEM / ISO) | A8 / M8 (Heavy duty) |
| Power Supply | Low-emission diesel genset + full AC frequency drive |
| Running Speeds | Hoist: 25~55 m/min; Trolley: 70 m/min; Gantry: 135 m/min |
| Tire Configuration & Steering | 8 wheels, supports 90-degree steering and zero-radius spin |
During system integration, the R&D team upgraded the 50 ton RTG crane architecture. This ensures engineering reliability in Oman.
●Heat and dust-proof electrical systems: Key electrical cabinets use IP65 thickened stainless steel double-sealed enclosures. Industrial air conditioners with advanced sand filtering are installed. The diesel genset features high-temperature derating protection logic. It uses a high-power desert-type cooling water tank. This ensures stable power output at 55℃.
●Marine C5-M heavy anti-corrosion coating: Whole steel structures undergo Sa2.5 shot blasting treatment. They strictly follow ISO 12944 C5-M marine coating standards. Primer is zinc-rich epoxy, and mid-coat is micaceous iron oxide. The topcoat uses highly UV-resistant polyurethane materials. Total paint film thickness strictly reaches 320μm. This blocks erosion from high salt spray climates.
●DGPS gantry auto-steering and anti-sway: Rubber tires easily deviate under heavy loads. The equipment uses a dual-antenna DGPS auto-steering system. The PLC compares theoretical tracks with actual coordinates real-time. It automatically fine-tunes motor speeds on both sides. Gantry running deviation is controlled within ±50mm. An eight-rope anti-sway electronic system eliminates container inertia sway. Precise alignment efficiency improves by about 30%.
●Energy feedback and dynamic throttle management: Lowering loaded spreaders creates massive potential energy. Regenerative braking units convert this into electrical energy. This directly feeds gantry or trolley mechanisms. It works with the smart dynamic throttle management system. This system adjusts engine speeds based on real-time loads. Per-box fuel consumption of this 50 ton RTG crane batch drops. It is about 18% lower than older port equipment.
The equipment was delivered to Oman’s Port of Salalah. It quickly joined the Phase II container yard network. This followed the completion of heavy-load trial runs. Back-end data from the past eight months shows great results. The HSCRANE 50 ton RTG crane maintains high availability. Its equipment availability rate is stable above 99.2%.
They handle over 400 physical boxes daily under high intensity. Structural rigidity and electrical stability passed tough tests. They withstood the extreme Middle Eastern summer climate. Auto-steering and anti-sway systems effectively reduce port operator fatigue. Average turnaround time per box is shortened to 2.4 minutes. This smooth operation boosts the yard’s logistics throughput limits. It also highlights HSCRANE’s high-end port equipment export matrix. We further strengthened our technical barriers and brand share. This secures our position in the Middle East heavy-duty market.
